PROBLEMATIC ASPECTS OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN GLOBAL SUPPLY NETWORKS

Summary

The article explores the characteristics of the strong link between trading and respect of the fundamental labour rights of workers.
It is found that modern trading is closely connected with violence at work in different countries, exploitation of workers and environmental degradation.
Corporate responsibility is not always understood. As companies grow larger and expand into a global audience, they often face very unethical practices.
It is proven that focusing on the fight against forced labour protects vulnerable workers and helps prevent human rights abuses. Investors can play an important role in overcoming forced labour by encouraging companies to be open about their attempts to deal with these persistent problems.
A problem is revealed when workers around the world are confronted with systemic barriers in the organization, including horrific violence and intimidation.
The study examines examples of international trade in goods from various industries operating on the basis of unethical labour exploitation or the use of available resources. Possible ways of counteracting unethical trade are analysed.
It is stated that it is necessary to carry out a policy on the purchase of goods made in humane conditions from workers who are paid decent wages.
The role of non-governmental organizations, which work hard to improve rights and working conditions in global supply chains, is outlined. The activity of the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI), International Labour Rights Forum (ILRF) , whose main purpose is to improve working conditions in global food, product and clothing networks of companies, is examined, that advances dignity and justice for workers in the global economy.
It is concluded that ethical products are a global problem across many industries.
Consequences of disruption of ethical production include: changing the supply chain, financial penalties, legal issues, damage to reputation, diminishing consumer demand and lack of interaction with employees. All of this leads to a decrease in the company's profits and entails inevitable consequences. Government policies, global trade and business practices should be crafted to enable and protect worker’s exercising of those rights.

Keywords: ethic; goods and services; production; labour; environment; consumption.
